...The Brightest!
My Grandma used
to tell us all the time that white four is making people less heathy. She knew
from her life experience. I believed her not only because she was my grandma,
but, I knew she was very smart and she read the ‘Sunday Observer & the bi
weekly Morning Star. She had graduated from Uduvil Girls College finishing her
senior Cambridge. She spoke English fluently & wrote letters to her
nieces/nephews abroad in English.
According to
my grandma, during her childhood ( and from ancient times) Tamil people ate
Millets regularly and were very healthy & lived long. Of course she often
cooked Kurakkan Puttu & give us with Palmyrah jaggery & coconut milk.
Priceless!
She had nice
long shinny hair & the brightest white healthy teeth I have ever seen
& no wonder the orderly at the doctor's office had asked her to remove her denture - thinking they are fake... My grandma was so... offended for a moment and then she started laughing.
This was the funniest story she liked to tell us while giving us 'burned husk of Rice' - the charcoal powder - for us to brush our teeth and of course we did using our right fore-finger. I never had cavities though we ate sweet desserts & breakfast until we were teenagers and had to use Tooth brushes at the boarding school!
Of course we consumed no millets at the boarding school - Rice based & mostly White Wheat flour (locally referred to as the American flour) - Bread/ Biscuits/ Cake. You name it... all our favorite modern snacks at school were made of white flour & white sugar... A long way away from the healthy Millet grains!
